enlightenment

~ “Enlightenment” ~

Enlightenment: definition – An act of enlightening, or the state of being enlightened, a concept in spirituality, philosophy and psychology related to achieving clarity of perception, reason and knowledge.

To me the title of this painting, representing Mary Lou as she emerges from the sweat lodge in British Columbia, says it all. Mary Lou is like a butterfly breaking out of the cocoon. She has been transformed from what she was to something beautiful in spirit and awakened to the ancient spirits and philosophers. Mary Lou had just received her gift.

I took artistic license with the teepee. They had constructed a pole teepee and covered it with blue tarps and odd blankets to form the sweat lodge and I found them artistically unappealing. I used traditional British Columbia native symbols as decoration to place the scene and for their meanings to some. Ask Mary Lou about the meaning of the coloured rags, the beads and feathers.

This is my first acrylic painting and I know it doesn’t do justice to Mary Lou’s physical appearance but I was after the inner change.
This is the beginning of a new life.
